I can finally announce something I’ve been sitting on for a while: I’ve begun writing licensed fiction for the Star Trek franchise, which has been at the top of my writing bucket list for decades. So far, I’ve written and turned in three stories, with another couple currently in the early stages. The first of these appears in the digital supplement to Titan Books’ Star Trek Explorer #10, which has now been released, and it will eventually be collected in a print edition as well.
The story is titled “Forewarned and Three-Armed,” and it stars Lieutenant Arex, from the 1970s Star Trek cartoon. This and a second story, not yet released, are part of the official celebration of the cartoon’s 50th anniversary, and I had a blast writing them. My thanks to editor John Freeman for inviting me to start writing prose fiction for the magazine, as well as to artists Aaron Harvey and Philip Murphy, who provided accompanying illustrations. I’m damn proud to have their gorgeous work alongside mine.
The issue also contains the first half of a lengthy interview I conducted with IDW editor Heather Antos regarding the future of the Star Trek comics. The second half of that interview, as well as the second short story, will appear in issue #11.
